What your small business website needs before launch

A new website is a big step. But going live is the start, not the finish line. The sites that bring in inquiries from week one usually have the same five things in place before launch.

1. A message people understand in five seconds

Visitors decide very quickly whether they’re in the right place. The top of your homepage should answer three questions: what you do, who it’s for, and why you. If a friend outside your industry can’t repeat it back after a glance, simplify it.

2. One clear next step

Every page should point toward a single main action, like booking a call, requesting a quote, or visiting your store. When there are five competing buttons, most people pick none. Make the main action obvious, and repeat it where it makes sense.

3. Proof that you’re real and trustworthy

People hesitate to contact a business they can’t size up. Before launch, gather what you can:

  • A real photo of you or your team
  • Two or three short testimonials, even from early clients
  • Examples of your work, or clear descriptions of what you deliver
  • Your location or service area, and how to reach you

4. A site that works well on phones

Most visitors will see your site on a phone first. Before you launch, test every page on a real phone. Check that text is easy to read without zooming, buttons are easy to tap, and your contact details work with one touch.

5. A plan for after launch

Websites need care. Decide ahead of time who will handle updates, backups, security fixes, and small content changes. A site that’s kept current keeps earning trust. A neglected one slowly loses it.

The short version

Clear message, one next step, real proof, a smooth phone experience, and someone looking after it. Get those right and your new website has a strong start.
